Titanium Alloys for Engine and Powertrain Applications
Titanium alloys are used in selected civilian engine and powertrain applications where high strength-to-weight ratio, temperature performance, corrosion resistance, and fatigue resistance are important.
Engine-Related Applications
Depending on the alloy, operating conditions, and design requirements, titanium alloys may be considered for:
Engine structural and support components
Lightweight housings and covers
Rotating or stationary mechanical components
Exhaust-system components
Fasteners and connection components
Heat- and corrosion-exposed mechanical parts
Key Material Advantages
High strength-to-weight ratio: Titanium alloys provide high mechanical strength at relatively low density, supporting weight reduction in demanding mechanical systems.
Temperature performance: Selected titanium grades retain useful mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and may be considered for appropriately designed engine-related components.
Corrosion resistance: Titanium alloys provide excellent resistance to many corrosive environments, supporting long-term durability.
Fatigue resistance: Properly selected and processed titanium alloys can provide good resistance to repeated mechanical loading and vibration.
Some common titanium alloy grades:
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V): A widely used titanium alloy known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand elevated temperatures. It is commonly used in automotive and industrial engine components, structural parts, and fasteners.
Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V): This alloy is known for its high strength, good weldability, and excellent corrosion resistance. It is often used in piping systems, sporting goods, and other structural components requiring a balance of strength and formability.
Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI): This is a variant of Grade 5 specifically designed for medical implants due to its biocompatibility and low modulus of elasticity.
Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni): This alloy is known for its excellent corrosion resistance and is often used in seawater applications such as shipbuilding and marine hardware.
