The microstructure of magnesium and magnesium alloys is characterized by a close-packed hexagonal structure, resulting in poor formability. Typically, the deformation capabilities of magnesium alloy sheets and strips in subsequent product manufacturing do not meet requirements.

Process and Parameters

Aikerly and his team have successfully tackled this issue. Aikerly is capable of providing a novel high-strength and tough superplastic magnesium alloy, produced through a continuous casting and rolling process, yielding sheets and strips.

By optimizing the rolling process and adjusting heat treatment parameters, the rolled sheets' grain size has been achieved to be less than 10 micrometers, and in certain cases, even reaching sub-micrometer fine-grained microstructures.

In comparison, the ASTM standard AZ series magnesium alloys have a tensile strength of 250MPa and a yield strength of ≤145MPa, with challenges in achieving deformation during rolling.

Our high-strength and tough superplastic magnesium alloy exhibits exceptional mechanical properties. At room temperature, it demonstrates a tensile strength of ≥360MPa, a yield strength of ≥260MPa, and an elongation rate of ≥15%. Furthermore, it maintains its ductility at low temperatures (≥100%) and even at intermediate temperatures (≥700%).

This achievement opens up  improving the formability and deformation capabilities of magnesium alloy sheets and strips,  enhanced  across a range of applications.

After optimization of the rolling process and adjustment of heat treatment parameters, the grain size of the obtained rolled plate is several microns to tens of microns, and asynchronous rolling can even obtain a sub-micron fine-grained structure

Applications

Aerospace Industry: Superplastic magnesium alloy strips can be used in the aerospace industry for the manufacturing of lightweight components. Their high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent formability make them ideal for applications such as aircraft panels, wing skins, and structural components.

Automotive Industry: Magnesium alloys are known for their lightweight properties, which can contribute to fuel efficiency and reduced emissions in vehicles. Superplastic wide magnesium alloy strips can be used to fabricate automotive components, including body panels, chassis parts, and interior trim. Their ability to undergo significant elongation and form complex shapes without fracture or tearing is advantageous for automotive manufacturing processes.

Electronics and Consumer Goods: Superplastic wide magnesium alloy strips can be employed in the production of electronic devices and consumer goods. The lightweight nature of magnesium alloys makes them suitable for portable devices, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones. The high formability allows for intricate designs and customization options.

Renewable Energy: Magnesium alloys are also relevant in the renewable energy sector. Superplastic wide magnesium alloy strips can be used for manufacturing components in solar panels and wind turbines. Their lightweight properties and corrosion resistance make them suitable for outdoor applications that require longevity and efficiency.

Medical Devices: The biomedical field can benefit from the use of superplastic wide magnesium alloy strips. Magnesium alloys are biocompatible, which means they can be safely used in medical implants and devices. The flexibility and formability of these strips allow for the production of custom-shaped implants, such as bone plates and screws, that match the patient's anatomy.

Superplastic magnesium alloy sheets and strips have a broad application prospect in the industrial field. Currently, they are mainly used in aerospace, automotive, and electronic product casings. Especially with the growing demand for lightweight materials, their potential in the transportation sector is particularly significant. In the future, the production may replace traditional materials in a wider range of fields.
