High-Strength Wrought Magnesium Alloy for Aerospace and High-Performance Applications
ZK60A is a high-strength wrought magnesium alloy alloyed primarily with zinc (Zn) and zirconium (Zr). It was specifically developed for lightweight structural components in aerospace, defense, motorsports, and other high-performance industrial applications.
With its outstanding strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue resistance, and stable processing characteristics, ZK60A is widely recognized as one of the most capable high-performance magnesium alloys available today.
Why Choose ZK60A Magnesium Alloy
As a China-based manufacturer and exporter specializing in engineering-grade magnesium alloys, we supply ZK60A products that meet international aerospace and industrial standards for global customers.
Compared with conventional magnesium alloys, ZK60A delivers superior structural strength and reliability, making it especially suitable for strength-critical and fatigue-sensitive applications.
Key Performance Advantages:
Exceptional specific strength among wrought magnesium alloys
Significantly improved fatigue life compared with AZ-series alloys
Better corrosion resistance than standard Mg–Zn alloys
Well suited for aerospace-grade extrusions and forgings
Proven performance in aerospace and military programs
ZK60A enables aggressive weight reduction without compromising structural integrity, making it an ideal material for advanced lightweight design.
Processing and Fabrication Characteristics
Forming and Bending
ZK60A can be hot formed after preheating to approximately 260 °C (500 °F). Under controlled conditions, minimum bend radii of approximately 2× material thickness can typically be achieved, depending on section geometry and forming rate.
This makes the alloy suitable for aerospace brackets, frames, and precision-formed structural components.
Welding Behavior
Recommended method: Resistance welding
Fusion welding: Challenging due to high zinc content, which increases the risk of hot cracking. Fusion welding is only recommended when specialized filler materials and tightly controlled procedures are employed.
For load-bearing or fatigue-critical structures, mechanical fastening or qualified welding processes are generally preferred.
Heat Treatment Conditions
ZK60A-T5 is the most common commercial temper
ZK60A-T6 provides higher strength but typically requires customized heat treatment procedures
For aerospace and defense programs, we offer tailored heat treatment schedules to achieve specific mechanical property targets.
Hot Working Temperature Range
ZK60A is suitable for extrusion, forging, and rolling at temperatures around 260 °C (500 °F). Processing parameters should be optimized based on section thickness, deformation rate, and final performance requirements to ensure refined grain structure and maximized fatigue performance.
Typical Applications
Aerospace and Defense
Used in UAV airframes, rotor components, satellite structures, and missile hardware. ZK60A’s high strength and fatigue resistance meet stringent reliability requirements under extreme operating conditions.
Automotive and Motorsports
Applied in transmission housings, suspension brackets, and engine mounts for racing and high-performance vehicles. Due to corrosion protection requirements, ZK60A is typically reserved for premium or competition-focused platforms.
New Energy Vehicles (EVs)
Suitable for battery enclosures, motor mounts, and other lightweight load-bearing structures, supporting vehicle mass reduction while maintaining stiffness and safety.
Electronics and Communications
Combines good electromagnetic shielding with thermal conductivity, making it suitable for laptop housings, 5G antenna brackets, and high-strength heat-dissipation components.
High-End Sporting Equipment
Valued for its vibration damping and rigidity in applications such as high-performance bicycle frames, professional racquet frames, and competition-grade sporting components.
Engineering Perspective: Design Intent of ZK60A
ZK60A is not a general-purpose magnesium alloy. It was engineered specifically to meet aerospace- and defense-level performance requirements.
Compared with conventional magnesium alloys, ZK60A offers:
Higher tensile and yield strength
Superior fatigue life
Greater structural reliability under cyclic loading
As a result, ZK60A has become a preferred material for mission-critical lightweight structural applications.
Supply Capability and Technical Support
As a professional magnesium alloy manufacturer, we offer:
ZK60A extrusions, forgings, bars, and billets
Material selection and feasibility evaluation
Customized heat treatment and mechanical testing
Processing and surface treatment guidance
Our ZK60A products are manufactured in compliance with ASTM B107, AMS 4350, and other applicable international standards, meeting the technical requirements of aerospace, defense, and high-end industrial applications.
